LAWN TENNIS.

Wellington Championships This Week. The Wellington- Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championships are t.o begin to-morrow, and the meeting promises to be one of the most successful of recent years. Most of the leading players are expected to take part in the various events, and C. E. Malfroy, the New Zealand champion, D. G. France, R. M’L. Ferkins and N. Smith have already stated their intention of competing. Amongst the women, Mrs H. M. D}*kes, Misses D. Nicholls, M. Whisker and M. Macassev will play. The men’s championship matches will be five-set events, and for the first time the handicaps will be the best of three sets. Draw for Inter-Club Competition. Following are the draws for the matches to be played next Saturday. Unless otherwise stated, matches will be played at Wilding Park:— Grade A Section I. January 20, Sixth Round—St Albans v. Cashmere; Opawa v. Addington I; Linwood I v. Canterbury College; Feudal ton v. Simmer; Elmwood I v. Cathedral I: Edgeware v. Woolston I: Belfast v. Waimairi I. Grade B, Section I. January 20, Sixth Round—South Christchurch v. St Mary's; Riccarton v. Beckenham; North Linwood v. Wesley; Linwood v. Spreydon; Addington Catholic v. Te Whaka. Grade C Section I. January 20, Sixtli Round—Opawa No. 1 v. South Christchurch, at South Christchurch: North Linwood 1 v. Elmwood; Heathcote v. Redcllffs; Addington v. Waimairi; Shirley v. Cathedral: New Brighton v. Woolston, at Woolston. Mid-Week Competitions. The following matches arranged by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association in connection with the sixth round of the women’s mid-week inter-club competition will he played at Wilding Park to-morrow, beginning at 2.15 p.m.:— Woolston v. St Martins; Elmwood v. Sumner; Opawa v.. Avonside. Taranaki Championships. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH. January 15. I The Taranaki tennis championship finals were played in a cold wind to-dav after two days’ delay because of rain. Malfroy made R. Howe (Wellington) look like a schoolboy in the singles final and won three straight sets, his dropshots over the net being a feature! Malfroy said afterwards that he was playing “all out.” The finals resulted: Men’s Singles—C. E. Malfrov (Wellington) beat R. Howe (Brougham Hill), 6-0 6-2. 6-0. Women’s Singles—Mrs R. P. Adams (Eltham> beat Miss Jean Taylor (New Plymouth). 6-4. 3-6, 10-S. Men’s Doubles—A. and E. Dickie (Waverley) beat A. Mackenzie (New Plymouth) and T. Wright (Auckland), 10-8. 6-2. 6-2. Combined Doubles—Malfroy and Mrs Adams beat Howe and Miss Taylor, 3-6. 8-0 6-2. The women’s doubles have yet to be placed.
