Dionysius, surnamed Exiguus and known also as Denys le Petit, a monk of Scythia, is said to have first dated events from the supposed date of the birth of Jesus, about 527. The practice was introduced into Italy in the 6th century, and into France in the 7th century. In the square mile which holds the City of London there are 700 forest trees, with the plane-tree most numerous.
