Takamatua Sports.
Farmers of Banks Peninsula, ns well as many holiday-makers from the city, had a picnic day yesterday at Takamatua, where the annual beach races were held. The weather was fine nnd for the most part sunny, but the racing course on the hard sands had to b»shortened in the early afternoon owing to the incoming: tide leaving the original pegs in two or three feet of water. The Oinako Cup, donated by Mr E. Leßievre for the principal race of trie day, was won by Mr F. Brocherie a Mickey Bingen, who was under the command of C. Glynan. The gate-takings were about £4 0. compared with £36 in the previous year. The results were as follow, the number of entries in each event being given in parentheses: Men's Thread the Needle Race (4) R. T. Masefield 3. A. L.. Hammond 2. (24yds bhd) 2, Roy Odell’s No Harvest (24yds bhd) 3. Won by a neck after a good race. Four lengths separated second and third. Dolly, the scratch boree. led for two rounds, when Belle Parrish caught her. Trot, boys under sixteen, girls under seventeen (4)—H. F. EeLievre’s Petty 1, Gerald Curry’s Boy 2. Oinako Cup (18)—F. Brochorie* Mickey Bingen (12yds bhd) 1, Roy Odell’s No Harvest (12yds bhd) 2. A. F. Shadbolt’s Antrim Audubon (132yd* bhd) 3. -Mickey Bingen took the lead early, but No Harvest took charge before the end of the first round. Antrim Audubon was lying third. The three ran in that position fox* the rest of the race, which Mickey Bingen won by a length, with Antrim Audubon thii*ty yards benind. Men’s Victoria Cross-Race over Hurdles (6) —L. Moore 1, R. T. Masefield 2, N. Curry 3. Egg and Plate Race, over Hurdles (7) —R. T. Masefield 1. The rest were disqualified through dropping the eggs. Takamatua Trot (14) —E. M. Hammond’s Goldie (48yds bhd) 1. J. Ferguson’s Belle Parrish (36yds bhd) and J. Daniel’s Nutric (108yds bhd) (equal) 2. Won by about twelve lengths. Flag Race (8) —R. T. Masefield 1, P. I>. Hall 2. Women’s Victoria Cross-Race (3) Miss A. Kay 1, Miss M. Masefield 2. Consolation Trot (9) —A. F. Shadbolt’s Antrim Audubon (132yds bhd) 1. Miss Whitehead’s Dillon Rose (108yds bhd) 2, Toby Robinson’s Rita. Nelson (144yds bhd) 3. Won easily, with a good race between second and third. Women’s Trotting Race (7) —Mrs E.
