GOLF.

Canterbury Championship to R. G. Arnouid. PLAY AT SHIRLEY. { With an aggregate of 147. R. G. , Arnouid won the Canterbury Amateur | Championship in the tournament play. led at Shirley yesterday. L. A. Dougall i and A. E. Grubb were eqtial second with 151. Arnouid. who learned his golf on the Braid Hills, Edinburgh, thoroughly deserved his win. Ilis rounds of 74 and 73 were excellent under the trying conditions that prevailed and stamp him as a first-class player. He has had a very succesful season at Shirley and has already won the Godbv Trophy and was runner up in the club chamj pionship. ! Last year’s winner and runner-up in the championship, J. Millard and A. R. Blank, were disappointing. Millard was obviously in need of practice, and Blank’s form was below what he has been revealing of late. A. E. Grubb began his afternoon round with a deficit of four strokes to make up on Amould's round. A six at the first hole made matters no easier, but from then on he played par golf, doing the return journey in 35 oi two less than bogey. Blank's outward journey on his morning round was patchy and he was troubled with his drive, taking sixes at Land’s End and Terra Nova. Coming in he settled down to very steady golf and. but for careless putting on the last green, had a chance of a 33. The last hole, however, cost him five, after being on in two, and the round was completed in D. Taylor. Ellesmere, won the morning stroke handicap after a plav-or? J with M. B. Cook (Harewoodl. The afternoon stroke handicap is not yet j j decided, R. G. Arnouid, A. E. Grubb | jand L. A. Dougall tied. As the winner l and runner-up in the championship are ineligible for the stroke handicaps, the ! loser of the play-off for second place in I the championship will, therefore, win j the afternoon event. | Scores were: — Christchurch Amateur Championship.
