MILLERTON DISTRICT.

(Special to the “ Star.”) MILLERTON, December 25. Heavy rains, thunder, lightning and hail showers, accompanied by a gale, were the weather conditions experienced in the Buller district over the ■ week-end, greatly hampering the usual Christmas festivities. Conditions appear more favourable to-day, and it is hoped that the remainder of the holidays will be more pleasant, particularly as Westport is crowded with visitors for the trotting races and other sporting attractions. Pigeon Clubs’ Activities. The Miherton Homing Pigeon Club held a race from Auckland under very adverse wfeather conditions on Saturday, none of the birds arriving home on the day of liberation. The following are the results:—T. Watson’s Ginger 1. W. Olliver’s Straggler 2 and A. Harris’s Ulm 3. W. Olliver won the old bird average, and T. Watson the medal for the longest flight. The Granity Homing Pigeon Club staged a race from Gisborne on Saturday. The weather conditions at the time of liberation were ideal, but bad weather was experienced throughout the journe\y and, as a result, only one bird arrived home within tvrenty-four hours after release, the others arriving later. A. Cochrane’s bird was declared the winner. The following *are the aggregates:—J. H. Tyler 6553.65. A. Cochrane 6542.01, J. H. Evans 6089.84, Dixon and M’Kechie 6080.09. The young bird races will commence on January 20. * There will be eight events, two each from Glenhope, Nelson, Wellington and Otaki. The leadinn- aggregate in this race will have a big chance of winning the Evans Cup, whilst the combined aggregate leader will have his name inscribed on the Carmine Shield. Sports at Westport.
