WESTLAND RACES.

Good Start With Summer * Meeting. INCREASED RECEIPTS. (Special to the “ Star.”) GREYMOUTH, December 26. The Westland Racing Club made a happier start with its summer meeting lhan it did last year, when Boxing Day was wet and the races were postponed. To-day was fine, the attendance was very satisfactory, the going was good and the totalisator handled £4211 for seven races, compared with £3655 for eight races last vear. The gates also showed an increase. In a field of four in the Thompson Handicap Knocklong got to the front shortly after the start and led for the rest of the iournev. winning easily from the favourite. Ringing Cheer, who was last early, but second into the straight. Imasurvey was a moderate third. Knocklong was formerlv a member of the Riccarton team of H. Nurse, who has Ringing Cheer. She is now trained at Omoto. Kncckfin’s Success. The Maiden Stakes attracted a field of twelve. Free Rose was left at the post. Margaret Rose led at the outset. ICnockfin took charge at the end of a furlong and led thereafter to win easily from Margaret Rose and Sundancer. Knockfin is trained by H. Nurse and is a sister to Knocklong. She was a hot favouriie Won Ail the Way. Rhea and Miss Nightraid were preferred to Arrowmid in the Rimu Hack Handicap, but the last-named led throughout and won by three lengths from Rothen, with Miss Nightraid a neck away third and Rhea fourth. Bright Spear and Mullaboden finished half a furlong behind. Buoyant’s Popular Win. Buoyant, who is rising fourteen years, scored a popular win in the Westland ; Cup, for which White Doe was favourite. Buoyant led throughout. Passing the stand the first time Buoyant led from White Doe. Gold Arrow and Ravine. The order was the same into the back. Ravine took second place at the home turn. Buovant was challenged by White Doe and Ravine in the run home, but he hung on well and won by a length from White Doe. with Ravine a nose awav third and Giggleswick fourth. Buoyant is tranied by his owner. Mr E. D. Davis, of Ross. He won a double at Grey mouth in June, then paying big dividends. Verdun Still Winning. Verdun, who won five races on the West Coast last vear, was sent out a better favourite than Gold Pit for the Christmas Handicap. Full Crop made the early running from Forceful and Verdun. The last-named got through on the rails at the home turn, led into the straight and drew ahead to win by three lengths from Forceful, with Full Crop half a length away. Thrilling Finish. The finish of the Hack Cup provided a thrill. Davolo was favourite, with good support for Errantry and Eaton Hall. Errantry acted as pacemaker throughout, with Davolo and Eaton Hall as his nearest attendants. Errantry came into the straight ahead, with Davolo handy. Pascoe rode an overconfident finish on Errantrv and Kirwan came with a rattle on Davolo. They passed the post together and Errantry gained the verdict bv a short halfhead. Platon Hall was eight lengths away third. W. Pascoe, rider of Errantry, was severely cautioned by the Judicial Committee for careless riding at the finish, which nearly lost him the race. Favourite Cut Out. Coll, favourite for the Goldfields Handicap, was cut out at the start. Tip Tree and Miss Mercia led early. Miss Mercia reached the back first from Animated. The last-named took charge coming to the home turn. The result was never in doubt in the run home. Animated winning by four lengths from Gold Sand, with Coll two lengths away. M. Kirwan rode three winners, two seconds and a third, having six mounts. The Trentham apprentice, W. Shand, also rode a winning treble.

REMEMBER THIS TRELLIS. For a change in the garden, a screen cr an arbour, you cannot beat a length ( Minson’s trellis. Closses up like a, board, each length pulls out to 12 feet. Cheaper than making it. X i
