CRICKET.

Canterbury Eleven to Play Otago. PLUNKET SHIELD MATCHES. The selector has chosen the following eleven to represent Canterbury against Otago, at Lancaster Park, in the Plunket Shield match, commencing at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 23: F. Bellamy (Sydenham). R. C. Burns (Old Boys). I. B. Cromb (Lancaster Park). W. A. Hadlee (Old Boys). R. W. Hope (West Christchurch). J. L. Kerr (West Christchurch). S. G. Lester (Old Collegians). M. L. Page (Old Boys), captain. L. E. Riley (Sydenham). A. W. Roberts (Riccarton). D. Smith (West Christchurch). F. P. O’Brien (St Albans), twelfth man. These twelve players will also make the northern trip. J. T. Burrows was not available for selection. In selecting the Canterbury eleven, Mr H. B. Whltta, sole selector, has stuck to form, and his difficult task has been well handled, in that the side is just about as strong as the material allows.

The newcomers to the side, Hope, Hadlee, Riley and Smith have all played their way into the team, Hope and Riley as well contrasted bowlers and? Smith and Hadlee as consistent batsmen and good fieldsmen. Smith has the add-

ed recommendation of being dangerous for a couple of overs with a new ball.

The bowling was the main difficulty, hut with Hope it should be 'every bit as strong as last year.

TO-MORROW’S GAMES. Interesting Finishes in Prospect. After the great field day the bowlers had last Saturday, some of the senior cricket games to be completed to-mor-row are fairly cut and dried, but in many cases the interest is still great, and there should be many spectators to watch the play. West Christchurch, with four down for 127, should have no difficulty in catching the Lancaster Park first innings score of 140, and Riccarton, with one down for 49, are in a favourable position against Old Boys (185). East Christchurch have not yet gone to the crease, but against the St Albans bowling they have a good chance of catching the opposition total of 223. Old Collegians, with five wickets down for 53, will have to fight hard to catch Sydenham, whose innings realised 354. EASY VICTORY. North Canterbury Defeat Suburban Team. The match between the North Canterbury. and Christchurch Suburban Cricket Associations was concluded at Rnngiora yesterday, Xorth Canterbury winning by an innings and 78 runs. GIRLS’ CRICKET. Australian Tour Not Possible This Year. Two important matters occupied the attention of delegates to the Canterbury Girls’ Cricket Association last evening. Miss A. Scott was in the chair. With reference to the proposed Australian tour, it was reported that as far as the Canterbury Association was concerned it would not be possible to make the trip this year. The Australian Women’s Cricket Council would find all expenses during the team’s stay in the Commonwealth but, stated Miss E. L. Harris, secretary to the association, steamer fares would have to be raised. Altogether about £250 would bo required. The Australian Council offered 25 per cent of the profits from the test match, but it was doubtful how much could be relied on. The opinion of the meeting was that the time was not opportune for the tour, but a tour, say two years’ hence, was something to work for. Miss Harris added that there would be a representative team travelling to Dunedin at Easter to defend the Mary Machin Shield in the annual interprovincial fixture against Otago. Providing billeting could be arranged, a team would also be sent to Wanganui for the tournament held there next ! February. It was decided that competition for i the Mary Machin Shield should be re-! stricted to provincial teams In the j South Island. The association’s decision was sought by two junior teams, Beckenham and ! Technical, concerning their match last I Saturday. Owing to a misunderstand- i ing between the teams, no gear was I taken to the ground and, after delaying the start of the match, the eaptalns decided to make it a friendly game. The ! association did not uphold their action.) and the game was awarded to Beckenham, who were winners on the day. | It was decided to play matches as! usual on December 23. after which there would be a fortnight's break, play resuming on January 14.
