The Tulip Tree.
A Garden Corner
TULIPIFERA, from the Latin words, Jirion a lily—dendron a tree. The tulip designation comes from the form of the unique flowers, goblet shaped green with yellow and scarlet blotches. While not of .striking beauty, the tulip tree has - "strong claims to inclusion in a quality garden. In habit it conforms to all the demands of a good avenue tree, with healthy distinct foliage and a nice spreading head. Just now a couple of fine specimens on the river bank, Victoria and Colombo Streets, are flowering profusely, and are well worthy of attention. Mr O. J. Parry, of Woolston, has also sent me a specimen flower for identification, therefore it would appear to be a favourable season, as it is not always free flowering. It belongs to the Magnolia family and comes from North America. It has also been called the saddle cloth tree, from the shape of its square cut leaves. T. D. LEXXIE.
