SERIOUS CHARGE.

Pursuers Caught Man and Bound Him. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 6. After being bound with ropes and taken to the Petone police station by a party of searchers, John Phillip Crampton Collett, a garage employee, single, aged thirty-eight, was charged in the Petone Police Court this afternoon with rape on a girl aged four and a half at Day’s Bay. He was remanded to appear at Petone next Wednesday. The little girl is at present 1 lying in hospital suffering from serious injuries. After receiving word of what had happened to the girl, Mr W. Dick, caretaker of Williams Park, Day’s Bay, organised search parties, and while patrolling the beach the party’s suspicions fell on accused, who showed fight. He was quickly overpowered, and after being bound was taken to the Petone police station in a car.
