HORNBY SCHOOL.

Arrangements for Picnic on Saturday. The monthly meeting of the Hornby School Committee was held in the school on Monday evening. Mr F. A. M'Teigue presiding. Members present were: Messrs J. Burgess, J. Kempthorne, P. Whyte, H. R. Parker (secretary), E. Pearce, Alex. Still and J. Smalley, and the head master, Mr F. E. O’FJynn. Mr J. Burgess was elected to the committee to /ill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr A. J. Pearce, who is leaving the district. The head master reported a roll number of 292 and an average attendance for the month of 27 4. A letter was reau from the New Zealand Railways, advising that a special train had been provided for the school picnic next Saturday. A donation was received from the Hornby ■ School Old Scholars’ Association, to be used for the purpose of installing an honours board in the schoo*. Collections from the residents during the month amounted to £4 10s. Messrs J. Burgess and J. Kempthorne were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. Concert at Islington. There was a good attendance at a concert and dance held in the. Islington Hall on Tuesday evening. The concert was presented by the Royal Chautauqua Variety Entertainers for the benefit of the funds oT the Islington Welfare Committee. The programme was as follows:—Juggling act. Mr Barnard: songs. Miss Marion Haruouit; novelty qui.al item, Mr Jack fcarfe: novelty act. Mr Charles Coats; comedy aml tap dance, Mr Eddie Megan; songs Mr Leslie Scrimshaw: mag.c, Mr Charles Coats; songs. Miss Marion Harcuiirt; lightning sketching. Mr Barnard; sketch. ” Brown," the comr.any: comic duct, Messrs Eddie Megan ami I-es Scrimshaw. At the conclusion of the concert a dance was held, the music bring supplied by Mi Norman Carson and orchestra.
