HOME GARDENS.
Too Many Obscured by Ugly Fences. With a view to discouraging the erection of unsightly fences, and brightening up the city, the Christchurch Beautifying Association proposes to conduct a competition for gardens open to the street, and not from the horticultural aspect alone. The project was discussed at a meeting of the association last evening. The question was raised for discussion by the secretary, Mr IT. Tillman, who stated that the association did not wish to encroach on the ground of the Horticultural Society. He had, however, gone to see prize-winning gardens, only to find them obscured by ugh* hedges or fences. In the competition, he had in mind, every aspect even to the fence and surroundings would be taken into consideration. Mr Sladen offered to donate a cup for competition unconditionally, the asassociation to make the necessary arrangements. Mr Sladen’s offer was accepted and arrangements were left to the secretary, who said that the competition would probably eventuate at the end of January' or the beginning of February.
