CITY COUNCIL.
Outstanding Rates Amount to £104,341. The Citv Council met last evening; present: The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan. M.P.) and Councillors .1. K. Archer, Elizabeth R. M’Combs, M.P., T. H. Butterfield, G. T. Thurston. J. S. Barnett. J. Mathison, Mabel B. Howard, A. E. Armstrong. H. T. J. Thacker, M. F. Lyons, T. Mil liken, T. Andrews, W. Hayward, J. W. Beanland and E. H. Andrews. The financial statement showed that of the general rate of £lll/980 19s lid levied for the current year, £7639 5s 7d had been collected, leaving £104,341 14s 4d outstanding. A petition was received from 54 4 residents of the Somerfleld district asking for a recreation ground in the district, and improved street lighting. A request was also received from the Somerfield Burgesses’ Association to receive a deputation at the next meeting on behalf of the petitioners. It was decided to comply with the request to receive a deputation. Tenders. On the recommendation of the Electricity Committee the following tenders were accepted: N. T. "Webb, of . £251, for the erection of three small substation buildings in the Halswell district; H. J. R. Somerville, of £313 15s. for the supplv and delivery of 100 32ft ironbark poles; Cory, Wright and Salmon, of £62 8s 6d, for the supply of half a ton of weatherproof insulating tape. For the supply of six 11,000-volt airbreak switches for use in the department’s 11,000-volt overhead distribution svstem, ten tenders were received, the lowest being that of the Nationul Electrical Company, of £lO5. The committee recommended that the tender of the Canterbury ISngineeririg Company, of £123 12s, covering equipment that would be made in Christchurch, be accepted. The recommendation was adopted. Fourteen quotations were received for (he supply of one ton of marline for use In the department’s overhead line work, the lowest being that of Maddren Bros., of £7O. The. committee reported that the six lowest quotations covered marline that was quite unsuitable for the department’s purpose, and the lowest tender for suitable material was that of Briscoe and Co., of £l2l 355. This tender was recommended for acceptance. The recommendation was adopted. The tender of Mr William Waddell, of £133 16s 3d. for connecting the Beckenham pumping station with the sewer was accepted on the recommendation of the Works Committee. Ferry Road Hoarding. The Town Planning Committee reported that in view of the objections received from residents in adjoining properties to a proposal to erect a hoarding in Ferry Road, near the corner of Osborne Street, it had advised Messrs Chandler and Co. that its application could not be granted.
