TRAMPING EXCURSION.

Final Outing of the Year a j Great Success. On several Sundays this year the weather has not been kind to the Railway Department and the trampers who took part in their excursions, but conditions yesterday, when the final tramp of the year was held, were all that could be desired. The trip was the same as that arranged for November 5, when rain forced the excursionists to spend the day at Arthur’s Pass. Over 200 trampers detrained west of Avoca, 1 and traversed about six miles of gently undulating country on the property of Mr James Milliken. At the luncheon spot, which was i reached about twelve o’clock, there was s a beautiful patch of native bush. After . a community sing the trampers set off once more, and completed the journey to Broken River Gorge, where excellent swimming was promised. The promise was fulfilled, and all those who had remembered to bring their costumes were soon cooling off in the water. On the sides of the gorge trampers found plenty to keep them occupied, bush, streams and as much climbing as they wanted. The manuka was in full bloom, and many filled their arms with the white branches. Some who did not desire a tramp spent the j day at the gorge.
