Sumner Surf Club Opens Its Season. The members ol the Sumner Surf ana Life Saving Club opened their new season on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of a good attendance of members and residents. Mr S. K. Bassett, the president of the club, extended a welcome to I he Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs W. H. Nicholson, also to Mr W. H. Benson, president of the Canterbury Surf Association, and the other sports bodies represented, as well as the members of the Sumner Lifeboat Institution. The season was declared open by the Mayor. A display was given by a seven-man team, consisting of K. Herrlott, J. M. Mitchell. .1. Veale, S. G. Henry, D. M. Richardson. W. R. Miles. F. Clark and J. Prangnell. The catamaran, manned bv L. Sutherland. X. G. Winter. J. M. Frengley and X. MTliail, also gave an exhibition. A dance was held in the clubhouse in the evening. Yesterday morning, members assembled at the pavilion and proceeded to the morning service at the Methodist Church. New Brighton Club. The New Brighton Surf Bathing-and T.ife Saving Club opened its twentyfourth season yesterday, under ideal conditions. The president. Captain A. W. Owles, declared the season open, and the Mayor of New Brighton. Mr E. A. M. Leaver, and Mr D. G. Sullivan. M.P.. also spoke. The events held during the afternoon resulted as follows: Pox Cup. (Four Men Club Event.) No. 1 team—E. Anslev (belt), A. Stokes (line), N. M’Dowell (reel), R. Cooper (subject), time 3min 43 3-5 sec I No. 5 team—A. Bryan (belt). O. Cooper (line), X. Smith Heel), A. Cocks (subject), time 4min 19soe 2' No. 2 team—A. Ilcntz (belt), D. j Cocks (line), J. Cocks (reel), A. |
Ansley (subject), time 3min 51sec 3 Chariot Race—Waimairi 1, North Beach 2. Flag Competition—E. Ansley 1. Surf Race—A. Dalton (scr), 6min ssec, 1; A. T. F. Stokes (scr), 6min lOsec, 2. Canoe Race—C. Herd 1. There were five entrants, and three capsized. The officials were:—Judges. Messrs A. I. Cottrell, C. R. Riordan and J. Sutherland; timekeepers, Messrs H. Throp and A. 1. Hughes; referee, Mr F. S. Tavlor; marshal, Mr C. C. Cauldwell. The Watson Cup. a single-handed club event, will be held at 11.30 a.m. next Sunday.
