ACCESS TO THE SEA.

Report of the Investigation Committee. READY BY END OF YEAR. The committee set up in August by local body representatives and others to consider the desirability of proceeding with a scheme to establish more direct access to the sea for Christchurch, will probably present its report before the end of the year. The chairman of the Investigating Committee (Mr W. Machin) stated this morning that he thought the report would be out before the end of the year. "We have certain items of information asked for which have not been completed,” said Mr Machin. “ Those items should be in the hands of the committee within the next ten days, and then we will be able to set to work seriously* to issue the report. We quite expect to have the report in the hands of the Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., and the bodies which appointed us an Investigating Committee before the end of the year.” The committee which has been pursuing its investigations under the chairmanship of Mr Machin consists of Professor J. E. L. Cull, and Messrs H. W. Harris, J. W. Beanland, H. S. E. Turner, J. G. Collins, and W. S. Newburgh. The personel of the committee was announced at a meeting of representatives of local bodies and interested organisations on August 23. A prior conference on August 2 favoured an investigation being made on the access to the sea issue. The order of reference finally agreed upon was as follows: “That the Investigation Committee consider whether in the present economic condition of New Zealand there are any fresh factors which point to the desirability of proceeding with either the tunnel road scheme or the Port Christchurch scheme, and, if so, to present a feasible proposition.” It was further decided that the committee should submit its report to the conference before releasing it for publication.
