NO AGREEMENT
Rates of Pay for Cooks and Stewards. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 29. No agreement w-as reached by the Conciliation Council which considered conditions of employment for cooks and stewards on coastal steamers in New Zealand (exclusive of Union Company- ships). Yesterday- the council failed to reach an agreement and this morning the employ-ers put forward proposals agreeing to a 15 per cent reduction on the 1931 rates, instead of 20 per cent as proposed y-esterday.
Alter a short retirement the union assessors stated that they- could not agree and would not accept less than the present award rates. After some discussion the Commissioner (Mr W. F. Gohns) said there appeared to be no hope of an agreement and adjourned the case sine die.
