THE POOR FARMER.

Government Trying to Help One Section. I The opinion that the Government had made the mistake of trying to help one section of the people without considering the reaction upon all other sections, w r as expressed by Mrs E. R. M’Combs, who opened her campaign for the Lyttelton by-electipn, at Lyttelton last evening. “No one feels more keenly about the farmer than I do,” she declared. “ I have relatives of my own who are having a hard time on their farm, but I do wish that the Government would remember that there are workers as well as farmers in the Dominion. The Government reminds me of the Irish woman, who when she heard of a terrible accident in which seventeen Swedes and one Irishman were killed, exclaimed, ‘ dear, dear, the poor man.’ What the Government says is, 4 dear, dear, the poor farmer.’ “ The community is one unit,” added the candidate, “ and any plan for reconstruction must embrace every section of the people.”
