WOMEN’S HOCKEY.

Canterbury do Well in Tournament. GAMES AT DANNEVIRKE. Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE. August 23. The annual tournament of the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association was opened in ideal weather, with all the grounds in first-class order. The games, nine in all, were watched with the keenest of interest by a large crowd of spectators. The Canterbury v. Wairarapa match was one-sided, the southerners being more experienced and showing better combination. The scorers were:—Canterbury, M’Kenzie (3), Hooper and M’Nab; Wairarapa, Rhodes. The Otago v. Ashburton match was a one-sided affair, Otago winning easily by 6 to 0. Otago was the better com. bination and had a better defence. The losers showed initiative but lacked combination, though they livened up in the concluding stages. The Otago rearguard was particularly sound. The scorers were:—R. Hunt, K. Scott, R. Kergt (2>. S. Th© Canterbury Hockey Association has received advice that the Marlborough Association is unable to secure a sufficiently representative team to travel to Christchurch on Saturday, and it has been decided to cancel the trip. It has been decided to hold a match at Hagley Park between the team which is to travel to Dunedin and the remainder of the Canterbury team. Any players who can make the trip to Dunedin on September 2 are requested to communicate with the selector, Mr C. C. Holland.
