Area at Cromwell for Unemployed. CAN TAKE UP CLAIMS. (Special to the “ Star.") ASHBURTON, July 31. Advice has been received by the Ashburton Hospital Board from the Unemployment Officer, stating that a large area of the Otago Central goldfields, known as Craig Creek, in Long Valley, Cromwell, has been set aside for registered and otherwise eligible unemploved men in Ashburton. The men to take up the claims must find their own transport to Cromwell, and must be properly equipped with clothing, prospecting gear and utensils, and a party of twenty reliable men, physically fit to carry out prospecting, will be taken. Tents and flies for their use will be supplied at Cromwell, and the Government will reimburse itself for this outlay by retaining 50 per cent of the gold won by the men till the full cost has been met. The board is now making arrangements for a party to take advantage of the opportunity offered. Lodge Anniversary. The third anniversary of the Star of the East Good Templars Lodge was celebrated on Saturday evening, when Sister V. Ford, C.T., presided over an attendance of seventy-five members and friends. After the singing of the National Anthem, the following toasts were honoured ;—“ Grand Lodge, ’ proposed by Sister Holmes and responded to by Brother G. W. Andrews, P.G.C.T.; “Star of .the East Lodge,” Brother Ford (Sumner) and Brother Tilley, P.C.T.: “New Zealand Alliance,” Brty ther G. W. Leadley and Mr W. J. Brown; “Ministers’ Association,” Brother Leadlev and Revs A. J. Petrie and W. H. Vickery; “Juvenile Lodges,” Brother Ford 'and Brothers Cochrane, S.J.W., and Pennie, P.G.S.J.W. (Christchurch) and Sister Brayne, S.J.W. (Lily of Sydenham) : “ Kindred Societies,” Brother Eric Leadlev and Mrs Osborne (W.C.T.U.), Mr (Sons of Temperance), Mr Corbett (Y.P.C.T.U.), Mr Watt (Rechabites) and Mr Wilson (Wakanui). Rabbit Breeders’ Association.

A meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Co-operative Rabbit Breeders Association was held on Saturday evening. It was decided to write thanking the Department of Industries and Commerce for the valuable assistance it had rendered in attempting to have market reports cabled from London on Angora rabbit-wool prices, and to express regret that the efforts had been, in a measure, unsuccessful. It was also decided to get in touch with the Agricultural and Pastoral Association with regard to the rabbit section at the next show. Two new members were elected. Church Army Mission.

St Stephen’s Anglican Church bells were rung at eleven o’clock this morning to call the parishioners to prayer in connection with the visit of the Church Army Flying. Column to Ashburton next week. The bells will be rung at the same hour throughout the week. The party will arrive in Ashburton next Monday, and the mission will continue for a week.
