WOMEN'S GOLF.

Keen Play in Wellington Championship. MISS BARNS-GRAHAM WINS. (Special to the " Star.") WELLINGTON, May 3. The final of the Wellington women’s provincial golf championship at Heretaunga to-day resulted in a .keen and exciting match between Miss W. Barns-Graham, of Gisborne, and Miss Valmai Fleming, of Christchurch. Miss Barns-Graham won at the twentieth hole. Both players received hearty congratulations for the golf they had played under adverse conditions, with heavy rain falling most of the time. Miss Barns-Graham did the home journey in 39, which gave her 85 for the round. Miss Fleming came home in 40, which also gave her 85 for the full course. In the semi-finals, previously, Miss Barns-Graham beat Miss Hanson 8 and 7; and Miss Fleming beat Miss Rutherford at the nineteenth. This latter match was a battle royal. Play in the final began at one o’clock. At the turn Aliss Fleming was one up. She was two up at the fourteenth. The fifteenth was halved in bogey three. Then the Gisborne girl caused a sensation by running down a 45ft putt to win the sixteenth in three to four. Miss Barns-Graham was now playing brilliantly. A good drive and a nice pitch gave her the seventeenth in four to five, and the game was all square. Aliss Barns-Graham had the advantage after they had played their third shots at the home hole, but she missed an Bft putt and the hole was halved in five. Still all square. There was keen excitement among the large gathering when the pair set out for the nineteenth. Aliss Barns-Graham sent on a better drive, but Afiss Fleming evened up by placing her second on the green with a hold spoon shot. Aliss Barns-Graham scuffled her approach, and a weak putt by Aliss Fleming saw a half in five. Neither was on the twentieth green with the third, but Aliss Barns-Graham made a perfect mashie chip that laid her ball on the lip of the hole. Aliss Fleming was short with her approach, and failed to sink her putt, and so Miss BarnsGraham took the hole in five to six and the championship by one up at the twentieth.

The Heretaunga trophy was won by Aliss Chrystall (Christchurch), who beat Aliss Vincent (Masterton), 2 and 1. The medal foursome was won bv Misses Culling and Rathbone (Auckland) with a card reading 85—7—78. Airs Parkin and Aliss Hanson took the prize for the best net score. Hagley Club.
