OBITUARY.
Charles Read. Mr Charles Read, well known in musical circles in Christchurch and Wellington for many years, died at his late residence, Barbadoes Street, last evening at the age of seventy years. In his younger days Mr Read was the possessor of a fine tenor voice and he took many leading parts in the operas produced by the Christchurch Amateur Operatic Society. He was well known for his genial disposition and was always to the fore in assisting at charity
concerts. Mr Read was an ex-member of the St Luke’s Choir and often assisted in the Pro-Cathedral choirs as soloist. A keen follower of sport, he took a great interest in- Rugby, having at one time been a member of the Merivale senior team, and later he officiated as a referee. Mr Read travelled with the Merivale team which visited Dunedin this Easter. He was with the Kaiapoi Woollen Company for twentyfour years and with the Wellington Woollen Company for twenty-one years. Mr Read is survived by his widow and one daughter. His only son, Mr Joe Read, was killed at Messines in 1917, and his two married daughters recently.
