Notes from the Course. (Special to the ” Star.”) DUNEDIN, May 4. Olson began fast and gaining the lead at the end of a furlong he never looked like getting beaten in the Bayfield Handicap, winning easing up by seven lengths. The backmar.ker, Teviot Downs, gave a splendid exhibition to be in fourth place at the end of five furlongs. He ran into second position nearly two furlongs from home, but could make no impression on Olson. Golden Bingen, who finished third, left the mark pacing and made a bad break at the end of two furlongs. Olson was favourite with £lB2 10s and £123. Teviot Downs carried £SB 10s and £7l; Golden Bingen £62 and £64 10s. A Hard Finish. In the Domain Handicap, after Whitstone had made the running for ten furlongs Sure and Lillian Bond headed him. After a stiff battle all down the straight, Sure beat Lillian Bond by a length. Ruin, who made a break two furlongs and a half from home, came on to secure third. Guyziah went a good race to fill fourth position. Lillian Bond was favourite on both machines with £199 and £212 10s. Sure carried £B3 and £132; Ruin £192 and £174. Beach Handicap. Priceless led into the straight in the Beach Handicap, with King’s Cup, Elite Bingen, Suncross and Red Spur in close attendance, but half-way down the straight Elite Bingen rushed to the front and won going away from Suncross and Red Spur. Gumdigger came fast in the straight to fill fourth place. Child de Oro broke at the start. King’s Cup was a hot favourite with £222 and £l7O. Elite Bingen carried £ll and £29 10s; Suncross £3O and £6O; and Red Spur £llO 10s and £l3l 10s. Victory Handicap. Blue Mountain Queen led all the way to win the Victory Handicap after a hard fight over the last two furlongs. She is a very game mare with a big future. Quita, Young Frank, Golden Direct and Waress were all well placed throughout the race, but after a sharp tussle in the straight Quita gained second place and Young Frank third. Golden Direct was fourth. Blue Mountain Queen was favourite with 247 tickets on the win machine and 188 on the place. Quita bad 104& tickets on the -win and 186* on the place; Young Frank had 131* on the win and 150* on the place.
EGMONT RACES.
Copey Wins Steeplechase Handicap. Per P**fcss Association. HAWERA, May 4. The Egmont winter races opened in fine, dull weather. The tracks were sodden, following an inch and a half of rain in the previous tw’enty-four hours. Results:— TONGAHOE HURDLES HANDICAP, Of 100 sovs. One mile and a half. 5-S—CONSENT. 10.3 1 2-2—INVJCTUS, 9.2 2 1- —CALLAMART, 10.10 3 Scratched: Ganpat and Sir Red. Won by five lengths. Time— 2min 57 l-ssec. TELEGRAPH HACK HANDICAP, Of 80 sovs. Six furlongs. 2- —SLIPPERY, 5.5 1 5- —PRINCE RENO, 7.0 2 1- —MERRY WAY. 9.0 3 Scratched: Cereal, Diversion and Grey Papa. Won by half a length. Time —lmin 3 9 3-ssec. EGMONT STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, Of 150 sovs. About two miles and a half. 2- —COPEY, 10.6 1 6- —JEN, 9.3 2 1-I—OKAPUA, 3 0.4 3 Scratched: Day Lass. Won by five lengths. Time—smin 84sec.
Amberley Candidates at Addington.
Weather conditions were good, and the big track, having been well harrowted after yesterday’s rain, provided good though not fast going at Addington this morning. C. Tasker was the first to get going and, assisted by a maiden of E. Berry’s, worked Full Hand over a mile. The Sapling Stakes candidate did his task nicely, going 2min 20 l-ssec. Rollo left two lengths in front of Marcello, with Colorado three lengths further back, in a run over a mile and a half. Rollo led all the way, and had just over a length advantage of the other pair, who were on terms at the wire. Rollo was kept wide out all tire way, and registered 3min 37sec. Going from a standing start, Renova began well apd led out from Fairyland
over a mile and a half. With the first half-mile gone, Shadow King chipped in, and in a good finish from the turn home, where Renova ran out very wide, the trio were in line at the wire. They werte well out all the way and went 3min 43sec. Waving Corn and Bar None, who are engaged at Amberley, worked nicely, finishing together over a mile and a half, and going 3min 36sec. John Jinks led Major Lind from end to end over a mile run in 2min 18 2-ssec, not close in. Social Pest, going alone, covered thte last mile and a half of two miles in 3min 33sec. When Colonial Boy and Holly Bank had gone half a mile of their two-mile journ'ey they were picked up by Lone Derby. At the end of a mile and a half, Lone Derby took charge and t finished on terms with Holly Bank. The | last mile and a half took ’3min 33sec. ,
