THE SOCCER CODE.

Canterbury and Otago Meet.

MATCH AT DUNEDIN. (Special to the " Star.") DUNEDIN, April 8. As a preliminary to the selection of the New Zealand side to tour Australia, a team representing Canterbury-Buller-Westland met an Otago-Southland combination here today. The game was watched by Messrs F. Ball (Otago) and H. G. Shouler (Canterbury), co-selectors for the South Island team to meet the North Island at Wellington on April 15. The teams were:— Canterbury-Buller-Westland:— Timlin (Westland) ; Cawtheray and Kelly (Canterbury), Teichert (Buller), A. Sutherland, Ellis (Canterbury) ; Clements, D. Sutherland, Trotter, M’Millan, Walker, Haley (Canterbury). Otago-Southland:—M’Dougall, Sutherland, Cope; Stenhouse, Brown, Chapman ; Ives, Whyte, Lattimer, Groves, Pinkney. Reserves; Taylor, Oliver. Pinkney was Southland’s only representative in the team. The Play. The Caledonian ground was in capital order. The Otago forwards were quickly into action, but Timlin defended well and Cawtheray repeatedly sent the southern team back. Canterbury attempted short passing between halves and forwards, but there was neither thrust nor crispness in their attacks. Pinkney, outside left for Otago, was easily beaten for possession by Teichert (right half), who transferred to Trotter. The centre shot and M’Dougall turned it behind. Teichert was opening up play and only M’Dougall’s confidence and certainty in handling saved a shot from Walker as the outside left, Sutherland and Trotter, rushed the goalie. This was the first time that Canterbury had looked dangerous. Otago again went near scoring when Pinkney centred, Lattimer leading just outside again. Cawtheray defended solidly for Canterbury when Groves took a pass from Brown and was dangerously close. Otago continued to have all the better of the game and would have been more dangerous if Pinkney had shown any skill. Otago opened their scoring when Groves made k dazzling run through, beating the backs hopelessly. Timlin rushed out and stopped him, but Groves hooked the ball from the scramble and shot an easy goal. As the spell ended, Clements made his first shot, which was unsuccessful. Half-time score:— Otago 1, Canterbury 0.

In the second spell, play was very desultory. Neither team showed any cohesion. In the loose attacks Otago displayed more penetration than Canterbury. Twice Otago missed scoring whe nthe goat was open. Groves made a soft shot into Timlin’s sure hands, and Cawtheray came across fast to upset Lattimer when the centre-for-ward was shooting. So far only Timlin had shown anything approaching firstclass form, and Groves was the best of the forwards., Canterbury’s front line was working poorly, Otago’s halves beating them all the way. Towards the end of the game, the Canterbury van livened up. Ellis transferred to Walker. The Otago backs were beaten and Walker shot the ball. It hit the upright and glided across the mouth to enter at the far corner. 1-all. Then Trotter made a heavy shot from close in. M’Dougall saved. Otago lost further opportunities. The game ended; OTAGO 1 CANTERBURY 1

SENIOR TEAMS

Friendly Games Played To-day. Another series of friendly Soccer games, including a number of lower grade matches, was played to-day. Conditions were again more suitable for cricket than football, although the grounds were a trifle easier following the recent rain. Eight senior teams were engaged, but Western and Thistle were weakened by the absence of several players engaged in the representative trial match at Dunedin. Nomads were without Trotter. LINWOOD v. NOMADS. Without .Trotter, Nomads fielded a strong side at Linwocd Park. F. Smith scored early with a neat header. Nomads 1, Linwood 0. Linwood thrice went close to scoi'ing before D. M’Rae, Nomads’ ’keeper, mishandled a squared shot from J. Gibb and the ball rolled into the net. A minute later, W. Waddeli made the score: Linwood 2, Nomads 1. S. Bremford kept the Linwood goal solidly against numerous Nomads’ raids. Just before the interval, A. Cope increased Linwood’s tally with a long shot. Half-time score: Linwood 3, Nomads 1. With the wind, Nomads attacked immediately, and Smith scored easily. A sharp Linwood sally ended in A. Gordon making the score: Linwood 4, Nomads 2. Nomads kept up the pressure and C. Goode notched their third goal with a ground shot. Eventful exchanges left the score at the whistle:— LINWOOD 4 NOMADS 3

A BRISK DISCUSSION

Question of Office of President. In a brief but brisk discussion at last evening’s special general meeting of the Canterbury Football Association, members endeavoured unsuccessfully to obtained from Mr P. L. Davies his definite acceptance of the office of president of the association, to which he was elected at the annual general meeting .som© weeks ago. In opening the meeting, Mr Davies said that he wished it to be strictly constitutional. He then spent, some time in determining the eligibility of members and delegates present, and was about to proceed with tho business of the meeting when Mr L. F. Foote asked in what capacity was Mr Davies occupying the chair. Mr Davies: As your president. Mr Foote: But you have not accepted that office. Mr B. O. Priddis supported Mr Foote. He said that the executive had been very patient in awaiting Mr Davies’s frequently promised statement of his intentions. He thought the members had a right to know whether Mr Davies accepted the office or not. Mr Davies: I have acted as your president and have attended all but one meeting. I have postponed my decision pending this meeting. If it is your wish I am quite prepared to vacate the chair to-night. A member: Does Mr Davies hold any other office in the association? Mr Davies: I am a trustee and a life member. A motion that tho meeting elect a
