COMMEMORATIVE STONE.

First Crossing of Hills by Pilgrims. It is proposed by Mr H. G. Ell, of tthe Summit Road Trust, that a stone should be erectedat the top of the Bridle Path to mark the spot where the Canterbury Pilgrims first looked down on the Canterbury Plains. Mr Ell has decided to have the Summit Road completed as soon as possible from the Dyer’s Pass to the Bridle Path. When this is done he intends to hold a gathering at the top of the Bridle Path of all the remaining pil-

grims who were among the first parties to cross the hill. The foundation stone of a monument will then probably be laid and some appropriate inscription put on it. The widening of the Summit Road has already been completed to a spot within a mile of the Bridle Path, and Mr Ell will establish a small camp at the top of the path immediately, so that the remainder of the work will be finished and the road ready for the gathering, which will probably be held in June. A wide turning place for cars will be made at the top of the path. There was at one time a refreshment room on this part of the Summit Road, where pilgrims stopped to rest while making the journey over the hill. The Bridle Path was used regularly till the tunnel was built in 1867.
