i Gatherings Held in Town and ; Country.

PIIILLIPSTOWN GIRLS' CLUB. The monthly dance held by the Phillipstown Girls’ Club proved a great success, both socially and financially. The proceeds were devoted to buying footwear for the needy children at Phillipstown School. The Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs D. G-. Sullivan, were present, and later in the evening Mr Sullivan spoke briefly of the activities of the club, and thanked the girls for the good work thqy were doing. The Monte Carlo dance was tv on by Mr Munro and Miss D. Dodd, and the statue dance by Mrs S. Clarkson and Miss D. Dodd. 11. Schou was M.C., and Wilson's Mfelody Makers supplied the music Others present were: Mesdames Wyatt. A variety evening was given recently at the home of Mrs B. Fanning in honour of Miss Aiieen M’Dowell, whose marriage takes place shortly. The drawing-room was decorated with bowls of hj-drangea.s and spindleberries. Miss M’Dowell received many gifts. The guests were Mesdames H. Noonan, J: M’Dowell and J. Hobbs; Misses Mavis Robertson, May Brandon, Xancv .M’Dowell. Edith Richardson, Beryl Fanning, Rosemarie Noonan. ' Mavis , M’Dowell, Annie Robertson and Hazel MCaw. Coming-of-Age Party. An enjoyable evening Yvas spent recently at the home of Mr and Mrs A. G. Bull, Spring Grove, Spreydon, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their eldest daughter, Jessie. The time was spent in games, community singing and dancing, and a song was sung by Mr Noel Burtt. Mr Noel Burtt was M.C. Those present were: Mr ana Mrs A. G. Bull, Misses Ena Hulbert, Piivllis Arsoott, Phyllis Walkir.son, June Brown, Elsie Bull, Noreen Hulbert, Lily Ward Edna Shrimpton, Marjorie Labourne Nellie Bull, Doris L) Connor, Alice Cottle’ Audrey Crotly and Madge Moyle; Messrs L. Gasson, A. Arscott, E. Dasli G. Watson. J. Cant, F. Bull, C. Bull, A. Shrimpton, R. Checseman. W. Whithair. J. Forbes, L. Hulbert, C. Wright, B. Winchester and N. Burtt. Twenty-first Birthday Party. A pleasant evening was recently spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. A. Adamson, Linwood, the occasion being the coming-of-age of their youngest son Keith. The evening was spent in games, competitions and dancing. The supperroom was decorated with pink and mauve streamers, coral pink dahlias and maidenhair fern. During the supper the usual toasts were honoured and Mr Adamson presented the guest of honour with the customary gold key. Items were given by Messrs Jack’ Piper (piano) and P. Piper (guitar and novelty numbers). The winners of competitions were: Mrs Ling and Mr T Burt and Mr Laurie Gifford. The luckv spot dance was won bv Miss I. Smith and Mr F. Brookes. Mr T. Burt was M.

Adamson P Piper, J. Piper, L. Piper, C. Cooper; W. Cooper, G. Butler, E. Piper, L. Gifford, E. Hooper, F. Brookes, E. Ward W. Ling and H. Young. Flag “ 500 ” Evening. A successful flag “ 500 ” evening was held in the Jellieoe Hall by the St Albans Returned Soldiers’ Sub-commit-tee, which comprised Messrs J. Alsford, W. Bain, C. Rule, M’Seveny, Chisnall and C. Stratford. Mr C. Stratford was M.C. There were eighteen tables occupied and prizes were won by Mr Downing, Mesdames Wright, R. Miller and L. Turner. Papanui Mother’s Union. St Paul’s, Papanui, Mothers’ Union were hostesses to the St Giles Methodist Ladies Guild, and the Belfast Mothers’ Union on Wednesday afternoon. The Rev W. FI. Orbell lead the devotions. Mrs Garrett presided over a large attendance and introduced Mrs WestWatson, who gave a very inspiring address on her travels through the Holy Land. Mrs Corby and Mrs Garrett thanked the speaker and afterwards a dainty afternoon tea was served. Kitchen Evening. Miss Valma IFaglund, whose marriage to Mr W. Gunn will take place shortly, was on Wednesday evening entertained at a kitchen tea in Trinity Hall, Greymouth, by members of the Holy Trinity Senior Girls’ Bible Class. Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn presided and in a eulogistic speech referred to the good tvork accomplished by Miss Haglund as a member of the Bible Class, and wished her every happiness in her married life. Miss J. Sotheran, leader of the class also spoke. Many useful presents were received by the guest of honour. Croquet Team Entertained. The croquet team who won the Association’s junior B flag were entertained recently at an enjoyable evening held in the Barrington pavilion. Congratulatory speeches were made by Mrs F. M. Maddren, Messrs A. Clark and E. J. Cooke. Competitions were won by Mrs Maddren and Misses Mimmott. White and Thomson. Among those present were:—Mesdames H. C. Lane, Maddren, Keys. Wells, Griffiths, Mackenzie, M’Gimpsey, Miss Maze, Mr and Mrs Memmott. Mr and Mrs Piper, Mr and Mrs White, Mr and Airs A. Clark, Mr and Mrs E. J. Cooke, Mr and Mrs Wootton, Mr and Mrs Giddens, Mr Elliott and Mr and Mrs A. J. Thomson.
