Captured Officers Still in Pirates’ Hands. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON. April 7 Regarding the British mercantile officers captured recently by pirates, Captain R. A. Eden, in reply to a question, stated that one of the officers, F. L. Pears, had arrived at Newchwang on April 3 with a letter from the chief of the brigands, demanding a ransom of a considerable sum of money and a large quantity of arms and ammunition.
■ Captain Eden said that the letter stated that the captives had not been bound or* ill-treated and had been kept in a junk in the Panshan area since their capture. The local authorities, who had been vigorously prosecutinga search, had been requested to take no independent action without first consulting the British Vice-Consul at Newchwang, who was in constant touch with all developments and would take all possible measures to secure the release of the captives.
