FARE HOME NEEDED.

Seeking Employment in Australia. COMMISSIONER'S WARNING. Although conditions in Australia have greatly improved, caution is advisable if New Zealanders cross the Tasman in search of employment. The New Zealand Trade and Tourist Commissioner in Australia. Mr L. J. Schmitt, who is at present visiting Christchurch, urged this morning that visitors to Australia in search of employment should be sure of having their return fares or some arrangement for a passage home. The experiences of many New Zealanders stranded in the Commonwealth had shown how necessary provision for the return journey was. Mr Schmitt is making his first official visit to New Zealand since his appointment three years ago. During the past three weeks, he has been associated with the discussion on trans-Tasman trade, and the protracted nature of these negotiations has cut down his time for visits to other centres. He is disappointed that he cannot stay longer in Christchurch, where he was officer in charge of the Department of Industries and Commerce in 1923-24. On Monday Mr Schmitt will interview those interested in export trade with Australia and the tourist traffic to New Zealand. On Tuesday morning he will go on to Dunedin, and thence to Invercargill and some of the South Island tourist centres. He is spending most of his time in the South Island and will sail from Auckland for Sydney on April 28. Mr Schmitt said that conditions in Australia were undoubtedly improving and the Commonwealth was to be admired over the manner in which it had tackled its difficulties over the last three years. At the moment, and during the last few months, there was a better tone in regard to the confidence of the people, who were apparently spending more freely internally. This was creating more employment.
