LOST IN CYCLONE.
Kinsen Maru Overwhelmed by Seas.
SYDNEY, March 17. j Brief details of the rescue of thirteen j survivors of the Japanese ship, the ! Kinsen Maru, have reached Sydney j from Captain Cato, of the vessel Hide | Maru, which is still searching for the j remainder. I A cyclone struck the Kinsen Maru | at noon on Sunday and continued until j midday on Monday. Tremendous seas washed the ship and swamped the engine room. Even the coal hatches were stove in by tons of water, and the pumps were soon out of action. The vessel was at the mercy of the elements. No boats, however, were launched. Every man was told to don a life-jacket and take his chance. The ship sank at 1 a.m. on Tuesday, ! roughly 403 miles east of Mackay. Thirteen of the crew, after being cast into the sea. saw a ship’s boat drifting j nearby. All swam to it and got on ! board. Others were seen on top of a raft and : sampan a short distance away. None ; of these has been located, but it is be- ; lieved that some of them wl?i be rescued.
