TO-DAY’S GARDEN FETES.

A garden party was held In the Phillipstown vicarage grounds this afternoon for parish funds. The stalls Mere effectively decorated with greenery and flowers. A physical drill exhibition was given by pupils of Mr Charles Buekett. The organising of the feto was in the hands of Mr W. Desmond. The stall-holders were as follows: Missionary, Mrs R. C. Joughin and boys of the Sunday School; sweets. Miss Pike: refreshments and bran tub, girls of the Bible Class; afternoon tea and cakes. Mrs Gordon and helpers; work stall. Misses Craddock and Spence; produce, Mr and Mrs Cleeve Joughin; white elephant, Miss Oppenheim: books. Miss Murray; variety stall, Mr and Mrs .M’Alister: and art needlework, Mrs Bolt In addition to those mentioned, there were many lady helpers. Shlrley-Mtethodlst Church. A garden party to augment the fund* of the Shirley Methodist Church was held at ”Te Wharekoa.” the home of Mr and Mrs A. K. Hadfleld. Shirley. Mr Hadfield's garden is the champion garden in Christchurch, and the many guests spent much time in admiring tingrounds. Mr W. J. Walter, introduced by the Rev S. Bailey, declared the fete open. Many attractions, including a children’s fancy dress competition, novel side shows and a musical programme, were offered. Mr W. D. Marks, treasurer of the finance committee, was in charge of the arrangements. Those at the stalls were:—Afternoon tea, Mrs S. 11. Provost and helpers; cake, Mrs E. Dixon and helpers; sweets stall, Miss E. Collins and helpers; and side shows, Mr J. Murray. Overseas League Party. The beautiful grounds of ” Millbrook,” Fendalton, the home of Mrs George Helmore, were kindly lent, this afternoon to the Overseas League for their garden party. The gathering was most enjoyable and many attractions were arranged for the amusement of the visitors, including tennis, clock golf, tea and character readings, and a one-act play produced by Mrs E. J. Cheynells.
