Band Plays Well to Gain A Grade Test. PORT NICHOLSON SECOND. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, February 24. The final sc-lo events in the New Zealand band contest were judged to-day, the B fiat cornet (own choice) being won by G. Christie, who won the championship on Wednesday. The bass and side drum solos were also heard. Results:— BASS DRUM SOLO, Sight Test. W. Woodley (Mataura Town Band), 40 points 1 H. J. Hall (Wanganui Garrison Band), 39 points 2 R. Allan (Timaru Municipal Band), 38 points 3 Also competed—C. H. Frew (Ashburton Silver Band), 36 points; W. Wallace (St Kilda Municipal Band), 32 points; W. Lock (Nelson Garrison Band), 30 points. SIDE DRUM SOLO, Sight Test. J. Lees (St Kilda Municipal Band), 40 points 1 E. Andrews (Kaikorai Band), 35 points 2 W. Sinton (Kaikorai Band), 32 points 3 Also competed—E. Harwood (Ashburton Silver Band), J. Hesford (Dunedin Artillery Band), S. Chittock (Timaru Municipal Band), 31 points; H. B. Briggs (Woolston Band), 30 points. Speaking of both drum tests, the judge said that competitors had been set difficult tasks in sight reading, the compositions bristling with tricky and broken times. It did not necessarily follow that the best drummer was the best sight reader. The judge demonstrated at the piano the correct playing of compositions and offered some useful hints on time signatures. He also went into some of the more common difficulties confronting drummers. The judge, before commenting on tne competition, expressed pleasure at hearing so much good work during the contest in this event, which he had kept marking down. In his opinion, the section should he used as a sort of trial ground for aspirants for championship honours, and none, save those with some chance of winning, should be permitted to enter for the championship. SUCCESS OF WOOLSTON. (“Star” Special Reporter.) DUNEDIN, February 24. The Woolston Band was again on top to-night, putting up a remarkably fine performance of the “ Downland ” suite. The band has been in splendid form and gave another inspired rendering, all the player# excelling. The hand wins £SO for to-night, being first in the selection, and £IOO in the aggregate, making a total of £2OO for the contest so far. St Kilda played finely to-night and was second. Port Nicholson fell away from its high standard slightly and was placed third. In the aggregate, Port Nicholson is second. St Kilda third and Invercargill Civic fourth.
