NEW CLUB ROOMS.

Ncy Brighton Returned Men’s Scheme. BUILDING TO COST £ISOO. The New Brighton sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association propose.s to build spacious club-rooms on the foreshore at New Brighton. The scheme has been made possible by the promise of a loan of £ISOO for a period of twenty-two years. This amount, it is expected, will be sufficient to buy all the materials for the building. The labour will be carried out free of cost by the members, among whom are carpenters and bricklayers. Practically the whole of the furnishings in the present club-rooms have been made by the members in their spare time. The sub-branch has a membership of 69. At a meeting last evening, 50 of that number signed a declaration to devote the whole of their spare time to the building of the club-rooms. It is estimated that the labour thus contributed will be worth £IOOO. The building will be of two storeys, and wood will be used in its construction. The upper storey will contain the largest dance hall in the borough and will be approximately 80ft x 40ft. The ground floor will contain spacious club-rooms, a lounge, a billiards rooms, a kitchen, and large dressing sheds for bathers. The site which the club hopes the New Brighton Borough Council will sanction is between the surf pavilion and the pier. It will be 75ft from the pavilion and will run east and west. The front will be 17ft from the stone wall, and the back 35ft from the footpath on the Esplanade. The area is approximately 80ft by 40ft. The New Brighton Surf Bathing and Life Saving Club has offered to pay a half share in a septic tank, which would serve both the R.S.A. and the club buildings. The Christchurch branch of the R.S.A. has agreed to support the project. The proposal will be considered by the New Brighton Borough Council at its committee meeting on Thursday evening.
