HEAD OF THE RIVER.
Rowing Competition Further Advanced. GOOD RACING WITNESSED. The second series of races on ths Avon for the Head of the River championship was held this afternoon under ideal conditions. The programme consisted mostly of races for four-oar crews, but double scull§ were included. Twenty crews competed from the three river clubs, and good racing was witnessed. The course was about half a mile and the finish was ofT the Christ's College boating shed. The sport attracted considerable attention and the races were got off expeditiously. The following were the officers for the day:—Starter, Mr J. T. Evans; judge, Mr D. Lee; umpire, Mr R. J. Hobbs. Following were the results:— LIGHT-WEIGHT MAIDENS —First heat: Union No. 1 (Cullen, Piper, M’Kenzie, Cullen) beat Canterbury No. 1 (Hampton, Glanville, Robinson. Carew) by a length. Second heat: Avon No. 2 (Mahoney, Kotoul, Edmonds, Ashby) beat Canterbury No. 2 (Forman. Walker, Vivian, Leathwick). Won easily, the Canterbury stroke catching a crab 50yds from the post. Third heat: Avon No. 1 (Costello, Smith, Harvey, Penman) beat Union No. 2 (Beardsley, Cooper, « ra ?'' B1 P er) by R « ood length. JUNIOR DOUBLE SCULLS—First heat: Avon (Brown and Andrews) beat Union No. 1 (Byrne and Butler) by a length and a quarter. Second heat: Canterbury (M’Combs and Smith) beat Union No. 2 (G. Smith and G. Butler) by a length. JUNIOR DOUBLE SCULLS—FinaI: Avon (Brown and Andrews) beat Canterbury (M’Combs and Smith) by two lengths. YOUTHS’ FOURS—First heat: Union (Empson, Cooper, Smith, Toner) beat Avon No. 2 (Blake, Trusten. M’Cammon, Dean) by two lengths. Second heat; 2ow t x e, ? U * y . (Hosking, Spence. Harvey. Salt) beat Avon No. 1 (Bowden. Walker, Asher Rush worth) by a length. Final—Union (Empson. Cooper, Smith, Toner) beat Canterbury (Hosking Spence, Harvey, Salt) by a length and a quarter. MAIDEN DOUBLE SCULLS—First heat: Canterbury No. 2 (Cox and G East) beat Avon (Harper and Wright > easily. Second heat: Canterbury No I (Hunter and Moray Smith) beat Union (Crocker and Hill) by half a length. The total points scored up till this afternoon were: Union 8, Canterbury 6 and Avon 6. SENIOR FOURS Avon (Stile'. Thompson, Giiby, Andrews) beat Canterbury (Cox, Rogers. M’Giffen, East) by a length. Avon led at the start by a. canvas, and kept their position till haif way. Here they increased their lead, and were never headed.
