CHRISTMAS TREE PLAN

Very pretty ornaments for the tree can be made by selecting a number of small crooked twigs; the more short growths or thorns these have the better. Now round the twigs, bind some loose cotton-wool with threads. Mix up a solution of two pounds of alum in a quart of boiling water. Put this into a deep bowl and suspend the twigs in the solution, leaving them there for twelve hours. At the end of this time they will be found to be beautifully decorated with alum crystals, which look very much like frost flowers. These glitter in a most attractive way when placed on the branches of the tree. If desired, the crystal twigs may easily be produced in colours. All one has to do is to mix aniline dye of the right shade into the solution and suspend the twigs.
