Christmas Trees.

A Garden Corner.

TT IS ONLY NATURAL that A colonists should take with them into new lands the customs they had observed at home. And in their choice of Christmas trees suited to the purpose, they had no difficulty, for the indigenous forests of Europe provided just the kind required. Tall and conical in shape, with sturdy, wellspaced branches and clean foliage, the Spruce Firs of Norway, Sweden and Germany -were ideal and easily got. Nowadays they are specially grown in tubs and pots for the purpose, with some firms at Home, this being an important branch. Here we find the Oregon pine answers the purpose admirably, being a better grower. So also do some of the stoutbranched Piceas, such as Grandio or Nordmanniana. As a means to an end, that of giving joy to the young at the festive season, there is little chance that the part played by the useful Christmas tree will ever be decried. T. D. LENNIE.
