CHRISTMAS GREETINGS. | i ; “ Inner Guard ” acknowledges with pleasure the Christmas and fraternal greetings extended by district officers; and lodges in Canterbury, and heartily j reciprocates the sentiments. U.F.S. Dispensary. The financial year closes at the end of this month, and the collection of dues so far has been * very satisfactory. There are still a few outstanding dues, and lodge secretaries are reminded of the necessity of accounts being settled before the books close. At the close of the last meeting of the board members were entertained by the president, and several toasts were honoured and season’s greetings exchanged. T7.A.0.D. Mistletoe Lodge.—There was no indication of a depression on the faces of some 200 children and parents at the Christmas party on Monday night. Father Christmas made his appearance and, escorted by his bearded bards, moved through the merry children to his seat under the Christmas tree, festooned with coloured balloons and lights. An entertainment was provided , and every child received a present, as well as sweets and refreshments. • The committee in charge of the arrangements were congratulated on the excellent programme provided. Pioneer Lodge.—Arch Druid Brother T. Campbell presided and welcomed the Grand Lodge officers. Brothers F. W. Hughes, D.P., and Marshall, P.D.P. (Hope of St Albans). An intimation bof the appointment of Brother Robinson as D.P. for No. 1 District was received from the Grand Secretary. _ At the dose of lodge business a social evening t was tendered to the past treasurer. Brother W. Desmond. A presentation of a wallet and cheque was made to him l,y G.V.P. Brother C. Barnes on behalf of the lodge, and his twelve years’ work as treasurer was eulogised. Brother Hyde, who has completed his term of office, was presented with a past-arch diploma for services rendered, the presentation being made by the District President, Brother F. W. Hughes. Musical and other items were given by Brothers North, Laurence, Sutherland, Bishlayer and Jones, and the usual toasts were honoured. A.O.F. Court Pride of Ashburton Juveniles.— Over forty members and many visitors, accompanied by the male members of the adult Court, were conveyed by private cars to Ashton beach, where the second annual picnic was held. Races and games were keenly contested, and the District donated one guinea towards the prize fund. A large Christmas cake was presented by the adult Court. i.0.0.f. Star of Opawa.—Brother 11. J. Spence, N.G., presided, and extended a hearty welcome to the N.G. of the S-tar of Linwood and officers and members. The dance committee reported on the success of the dance conducted regularly by the lodfwC in the Starctta Hall, and invitations were given to members of Oddfellows’ lodges to be present. As this was the last meeting of the year the lodge was closed early, pnd an enjoyable supper was served, followed by indoor sports. Season's greetings were exchanged, all present joining in “Auld bang Syne." The next meeting will take place on January 12. Star of St Albans.—N.G. Brother M’Callum presided, and extended a hearty welcome to Brother L. Steel, D.D.G.M. The report of the meeting of the U.F.S. Dispensary was tendered by the delegates and corxespondence received from Grand Lodge. The next meeting is announced for January 9. North Canterbury Encampment, No. 3. —Chief Patriarch W. Thackwell presided at the meeting in the Star of j Sydenham Lodge room. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Chief Patriarch, A. W. Savage; S.W., H. A. j, Tullett; J.YV., C. A. A. Smith; scribe. L. W. Cooper; treasurer, R M'Callum; auditors. W. Herbert and A. L. Clark. It was decided to send greetings to the Grand Sire, Deputy-Grand Sire and encampments throughout New Zealand. At the close of the meeting a social hour was spent, and it was decided to hold the next meeting on February 1, when the installation of officers will take place. M.G., 1.0.0. F. North Canterbury Executive Committee.—Brother C. J. Holsey, District Grand Master, presided, and the season’s greetings and expressions of goodwill were received from the New Zealand Grand Master, Grand Lodge officers, Canterbury Grand Lodge, U.A.0.D., and several districts in North and South Islands. A letter was received from Progress Lodge asking the executive’s support in the formation of an Oddfellows’ Sports Club with a view to entering teams in the local competitions. Considerable enthusiasm was displayed regarding the proposal, and it was decided to hold a meeting of lodge representatives early in the New Year. Reports were received from members who had attended various functions during the month, including the very successful church parade held at Kaiapoi by the Loyal Kaiapoi Lodge. The revising committee’s report on the special District rules was discussed, and recommendations made to be submitted to the conference next March. Loyal Benevolent Junior Lodge.—N.G. Brother Jackson presided, and representatives attended from senior and junior lodges in the district. Sister Ryder, D' M.. Lvttoiton. and Brother C. J. Holsey, D.G.M., North Canterbury Dist«»v.v, presented the prizes won at the recent swimming carnival. P.G. Brother Smith was the recipient of an M.U. jewel for services rendered at the swimming carnival. The prizes won by the juniors in the lodge’s sports competitions were presented by Sister Ryder, and after supper dancing was indulged in by the visitors. Loyal Addington.—N.G. Brother G. M’lntyre presided, and a pleasant even-

ing was spent in cards and dancing at the invitation of Brother and Mrs I. A. Watkins. Prizes were won by Mrs Larcombe, sen., and Mrs Robinson, and consolation prize by Mrs Beswick; Broths- Rintoul, first prize; Brother J. A. Clarke, second; Brother F. Larcombe, consolation prize. At the close of the social, Christmas and New Year greetings were exchanged. Children’s Christmas Party.—A large gathering of children of members of Loyal Addington Lodge took place at Addington trotting grounds last Saturday. Games and sports arranged by the committee' were keenly contested, and toys and refreshments were provided for the children. Loyal Progress.—N.G. Brother P. Guy presided, and welcomed the N.G. of Loyal Addington Lodge. Brother TT. W. E. Parsons was re-elected as the lodge’s delegate to the U.F.S. Dispensary. The following committees were elected:—Sports, P.G. Brother J. L. Forbes, Brother Trott and P.G. Brother H. W. E. Parsons; social, lady members and officers of the lodge Brother H. PParsons, P.N.G., was presented with a Past Grand’s certificate by the D.D.G.M., Brother S. J. Geary. Season’s greetings were exchanged and the lodge adjourned for indoor games and refresh- . ments. L0.0.T. Lily of Sydenham.—C T. Brother R. Hamburger presided over an attendance of 100 members. The superintendent reported on her visit to Sister D. M’Grath, who is progressing favourably in Christchurch Hospital. It was reported that a Christmas tea will be held on December 28 in place of a picnic. Christmas greetings were received from Naval and Military districts. England, and Sister Blaney. District Foreign Correspondent. England. Arrangements have been made *o commence the Gymnasium Glub after the holidays. Prizes were presented to the winners of the “ hard-up ” competition Games followed the closing of the lodge. 1.0. R. Canterbury Provincial Council. —The month!v meeting of the Canterbury Pro : vinoial Council was held on Friday evening, when delegates from the Enterprise, Addington, Ark of Refuge. Richmond. Philipson, Pride of Christchurch. Riccarton, New Brighton and Woolston Tents were present. The nominations of Sisters Hobby. Cockle, Bros. Anthony, Holland and Tierney were received for the position of a Timaru Tent proxy. Sister Cockle was elected. The Judge of the Initiation Competition, Brother C. Miln. attended and presented his report. The competition resulted in Pride of fhrlstehurch and Enterprise Tents equal first. 175 marks; Woolston Teat second. 172 marks; New Brighton, third, 170 marks. The council tendered its thanks to Brother Miln for his services The Opawa Juvenile report showed steady progress, and special mention was made of the assistance rendered by Sister Bunt and Brother Martin. The junior executive report given by Brother C. E. Saunders showed that in the recent juvenile initiation competition the Philipson Juvenile Tent had won. The council congratulated this tent on the The initiation competition committee brought forward several improvements for the competition during the next term, the majority of the suggestions being adopted. No picnic will be held by the council this year. The council recommend that friendly societies should take care to see that no further inroads are made by the Government in the way of taxation on the sick and funeral funds. Star of Riccarton Juvenile Tent.—A good attendance of members at St James’s Hall, was presided over by the Chieft Ruler, who initiated two new members. The invitation of the adult tent to attend a social on December 21 was accepted, and the lodge closed to take part in games and competitions. Juvenile Executive.—Brother Gifford was appointed secretary at the meeting at which were present Sisters Dell, Martin, Smallwood, Coton. Brothers Jackson, Rennie, Gifford, Anthony and C. E. Saunders. Sister Coton acted on behalf of Sister Schenkel, and it was resolved to hold the monthly meetings on the second Friday in each month. Timaru and Ashburton Tents were invited to appoint proxies to represent them on the executive. The official visits to tents were agreed to, and Sister Coton's report on Addington Tent’s juvenile committee and Brother Rennie’s report on a visit to Ashburton Tent were received. The results of the juvenile initiation competition were as follows: Philipson 93, Opawa 921, Whakaroa 92, Tawera 91, Riccarton SS, Linwood 87. Superintendents were asked to forward reports for the New Zealand " Rechabite Star of Woolston. —The twenty-first anniversary was celebrated in the Druids’ Hall on Monday in the presence of a large gathering of members and friends. Brother Forsey officiated as M.C.. and a programme of dancing and music was carried out to music supplied by Sister Rees (Ark of Refuge) and Brother R. F. Downs. Items were contributed by Miss K. Chappie, Messrs R. Foster and H. Downs. Sisters P. Canning and E. Hobby arranged the supper. The D.C.R. Brother C. H. Bascand congratulated the tent on attaining its majority, arid handed over the keys of seniority, and commented on the progress of the lodge. He eulogised the faithful service of the secretary (Brother Foster) and Brother Terise during the past twenty-one years. P.P.C.R. Sister Bunt addressed the gathering and called on Brothers Foster and Terise to cut the birthday cake prepared by Sister E. Hobby, and they both responded to the complimentary remarks. Amongst those present were P.P.C.R. Sister Bunt, P.S.F.M. Sister Dell and D.C.R. Brother C. H. Bascand.
