Ministerial. The Hon Adam Hamilton, Minister Gf Labour, passed through Christchurch this morning on his way south. Colonel G. J. Smith, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington this morning. Mr D. M’Kechnie (Dunedin) is staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr R. M. Ryan (Auckland) is registered at the United Service Hotel. Dr J., Restell Thomas was re-elected chairman of the St John Ambulance Association at its meeting last evening. Messrs D. M’Dougall and R. M’Keen, M.P.’s, arrived from Wellington by the ferry steamer this morning. A Wellington message announces the death of R£r Martyn Hume, vice-presi-dent of the Wellington Stock Exchange. Messrs E. A. Anderson, H. F. Griffiths and A. E. Flower arrived from Wellington by the ferry steamer this morning. Sir Walter Stringer will arrive in Christchurch from Dunedin to-morrow. He will preside at a sitting of the War Pensions Appeal Board at Christchurch on January 9. Sir James Mills, chairman of directors of the Union Steam Ship Company, arrived at Auckland by the Rangitata yesterday, after spending several months in England. Mr IT. T. Metherell, the recently appointed chairman of the Ashley County Council, was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., at Rangiora yesterday. The Reverend Father Leonard Bryce, S.M., who was ordained at St Patrick’s Church, Napier, on Sunday, passed through Christchurch to-day on his way to Fairlie. Mr Horace Thompson, after being four weeks as a patient in St George’s Hospital, has now recovered, and returned to his home at Clyde Road, Fendalton. His Honor Mr Justice Frazer and Mr A. L. Monteith, members of the Arbitration Court, will leave Christchurch this evening for Wellington, where they will spend the Christmas vacation. The appointment of Mr J. F. Moffat as house master at Adams House has been confirmed by the Canterbury College Board of Governors. Mr A. J. Gainsford previously occupied that position. Messrs A. E. Flower, J. G. Poison, IT. D. Acland and Dr J. Hight have been reappointed as representatives of the Canterbury College Board of Governors on the Workers’ Educational Association’s Tutorial Class Committee for 1933. Mr IT. W. Rhodes, M.A., of Ormond College, University of Melbourne, has been appointed to the position of lecturer in English at Canterbury College, vice Dr Helen Simpson. Mr Rhodes graduated in 1927, taking honours in English. Since then he has been acting as tutor in Ormond College. He has had experience also in Workers’ Educational Association work. The appointment was confirmed at a meeting of the Canterbury College Board of Governors yesterday afternoon. A well-known Auckland business man, Mr Sydney Alfred Smith, of Parnell, died recently, aged fiftysix years. He was a partner in the firm of S. A. Smith and Company, Ltd., druggists, of Albert and Stanley Streets. Air Smith was born in Auckland and was educated at the old Queen’s College, afterwards qualifying as a pharmaceutical chemist. Later he came to Christchurch, where he became a partner in the firm of G. W. Bennett and Company, manufacturing chemists. Fifteen years ago the firm was reorganised and transferred to Auckland under the name of S. A. -Smith and Company.
