MAYOR’S APPROVAL.
Urges Support of Rotary Club Appeal. Warm support of the Rotary Club’s Christmas appeal was expressed by the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) this morning. "I sincerely trust that there will be a generous response on the part of the people of Christchurch to the Rotary Club’s appeal,” he said. “ The amount of distress at present is much greater than was the case last Christmas, with the result that many more applications for hampers have been received than ever previously. To meet all the applications made would cost about £2500, but the list has been rigorously combed and the numbers reduced to about 1150. As well as these, there are at least another 150 cases almost as urgent which the Rotary Club wishes to help, making a total of 1300, and I have no doubt that amongst the remaining 1200 and others whose applications have reached me personally since the list closed there are many in need of help. “ All the money received by the club will be spent on hampers, and it follows that each additional pound beyond the £I3OO that the citizens subscribe will mean another poor family provided with a Christmas dinner. Dtiring the last year our people have made many sacrifices in response to appeals to help those in distress, but it will be agreed that at Christmas, above all other times, we wish that people should be enabled to forget their poverty, temporarily, at least. The appeal of the Rotary Club is supported by every consideration of Christianity and good citizenship, and I am happy to add my voice to that of the club in this appeal.”
