CRICKET.

Matches at Christ’s College. The annual matches between past and present pupils of Christ’s College were played at the college grounds, Hagley Park, yesterday afternoon. In the senior match, the Old Boys were definitely on top, and secured a win by 82 runs on the first innings. Of the eight wickets down, only five were out, the other three batsmen retiring. For the old hoys, Q. Hamilton made top score of 59, L. R. Dunster 38 and B. S. Smyth 29. All three retired. H. M. Chrystall made 34 not out. For the present pupils N. P. Wilder compiled 35, M. G. Somerville 23 and T. A. Harpur 23. Bowling for the present, pupils, Harpur took two wickets for 31 runs, and for the old boys Smyth took three wickets for two and Graham three for 36. Second Elevens. In the second elevens match, Old Collegians scored 124 in the first innings, Williams 47 and Tothill 20 being the top scorers. For College, J. C. Saunders took six wickets for 29 runs. College’s first innings realised 140 runs for the loss of six wickets. Webb retired 52, J. C. Saunders retired 41 and Maling 17 were the best batsmen. An under fifteen years College team also met an Old Collegians eleven and defeated them by 66 runs on the first innings. Old Collegians scored 87 (Stewart 42, Woodhouse 16). Shelley, three for 26, and Suckling, two for 12, bowled best. Christ’s College, 153 (Suckling 35, Handyside 24* Uouisson not out 29). Bowling for Old Collegians, Stewart took three wickets for 13 runs and Tipping three for 34. Boys’ Association. Yesterday at the Christ’s College ground, the Otago and Caaterhury Boys’ Cricket Associations commenced their annual matches for the Biltcliff and Ilex Cups. About an hour before time the under sixteen years match had finished in a win for Canterbury by an innings and 32 runs. The senior match proved a rather easy victory by an innings and 32 runs for the Canterbury team, which included some really good howlers. For Otago, who made 49 in their first innings and 65 in their second, T. A. Chisholm made top score of 20, and in Canterbury’s first innings R. C. Shand compiled 55 and L. A. Densem 44. Bowling for Canterbury, R. Lewis took six wickets for 18 .runs and Densem three for 9; and for Otago, C. Duerden six for 42 and J. I. Martin two for 12. Junior Game. Play was much more evenly contested in the under fifteen years match, and at the close of play for the day the position was a most interesting one, Canterbury having still to notch 85 runs for a win and having nine wickets still to fall. Banks’ Match. The annual match between the Bank of New Zealand and the National Bank was played at Hagley Park yesterday. The outstanding performance was a dashing 111 not out scored by Ollivier for the Bank of New Zealand, which won by six runs on the first innings. For the National Bank, Pope took five wickets for 15 runs, and for the Bank of New Zealand F*isse captured three for 19 and Garrett six for 32. Public Service Match. The annual cricket match between teams representing the new and old Government buildings was played at Hagley Park yesterday and resulted in a win for New Government Buildings by ten wickets. Old Government Buildings made 86 (O. Milne 28, K. Murray 28) and 84 (J. Haughev 18, A. Bell IS not out, and C. M’Cree 15). G. Brittenden took one wicket for 12 runs and six for 14, and J. Goldstone. three for 4 and three for 27. New Government Buildings made 115 (J Goldstone 241 .1, O’Malley IS, and A. Besley 16) and 63 for no wickets (Brittenden 40 not out. O'Malley 22 not out). Milne took four wickets for 24 runs, M’Cree two for 24, and Haughey two for 13.
