DUNEDIN RACES.

Acceptances for Second Day| (Special to the “ Star.”) DUNEDIN, October 7. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting will be continued to-morrow. The weather to-day was cool and overcast, but the barometer was encouraging. The principal event will be the Dunedin Guineas. Silver Scorn looked unbeatable, and may still prove so, but she has been suffering from seasonable trouble. It is thought that she is much better to-day in that regard, but the development certainly increases the “if ” element regarding her prospects. Horses expected to be prominent in their respective races are:— Waikari Hurdles—Captain’s Gift. Kaikorai Handicap—Flower, Hystride and Fleeting Glance. Shorts Handicap—Last March and Hula Belle. Ranfurly Handicap—Muff, Mount Boa and Red Racer. Guineas—Silver Scorn and Rocket. Dominion Handicap—The GuaranteeSouthdown bracket and Daring Deed. Telegraph Handicap—Adelphi, Ruling Light and Don Jose. Clarendon Handicap—Purse, Shamfight and Silver Streak. The starting times are similar to those on the first day. Gallant Fox pulled up badly after just losing the October Handicap yesterday, and has, therefore, been withdrawn from to-morrow’s events. Wealth is an unlikely starter in the Dunedin Guineas, in which the riders will be: —Rocket, D. O’Connor; Tout le Mond, L. J. Ellis; Irish Lady, G. Barclay; Arden's Beauty, P. Powell; Silver Scorn. A. H. Eastwood. Other riding engagements include:— L. J. Ellis, Ballance, Fair Weather, Mount Boa, Adelphi and Silver Streak; A. H. Eastwood, Gold Dress, Blue Metal, Muff, Half Note and Shock; R. E. Coveny, Fleeting Glance and Don Jose; E. Ludlow, Rother; W. L. Jones, Solanum, Some Toff, June the Third and Reminder; G. Barclay, Southern Princess and Toreador; S. Wilson, Purse and Flower; D. O’Connor, Antrim Boy; W. Cooper, Captain’s Gift; C. W. Brodie, probably Some Good; B. 11. Brodie, probably Water Power and Guarantee. The acceptances are:—

“CAN PULL THROUGH.”

Position of Racing Club Discussed. (Special to the ” Star.”) AUCKLAND, October 7. At the adjourned meeting of the Te Kuiti Racing Club the president (Mr H. Rothery) said that the question of winding up the club had previously been suggested, but he felt sure the position was no worse than that of many other small clubs and that with

co-operation among members the club could pull through. In accordance with a decision at the last meeting, with Mr F. Vercoe, of Hamilton, Mr Rothery had approached the Waikato Racing Club with a view to amalgamation. The Waikato Club was setting up a sub-committee to meet the Te Kuiti Club, and he was hopeful some arrangement could be arrived at whereby the Waikato Club could conduct the Te Kuiti Club’s meeting for one year at least. It was decided to recommend to the incoming committee that a sub-commit-tee be set up to approach the Waikato Club and make the best arrangement possible.

TROTTING HANDICAPS.

Owners and Breeders Want Change in System.

A meeting of the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association was held on Wednesday evening, the president, Mr G. R. Hunter, being in the chair. There was a large attendance. Correspondence was received from the Greymouth and the Westport Trotting Clubs regarding their programmes. The association decided to assist both clubs in every way possible, and the meeting appreciated the club’s efforts in giving such good stakes as compared with other clubs that receive bigger nominations than the Coast clubs do. The vagaries of handicappers were discussed at considerable length, and numerous instances of unfair penalties were given. The association decided to continue its agitation for fixed penalties and the abolition of handicappers. The president and Mr W. J. Wootten offered a framed photograph of^events at the relief trotting meeting to be placed in the association’s rooms. Appreciation of the gift w r as expressed by members.

HORSES IN COLLISION

A horse float containing three Trentham horses ran into the WellingtonPalmerston train at the Paekakariki crossing this morning, but fortunately neither horses nor occupants were injured. The brakes had been applied both to the float and to the train, which had almost pulled up at the moment of collision. The horses in the float were Gay Court, Araios and Late Test, who soon recovered from the fright. The trainers H. Benge and A. Palmer were also travelling in the float.
