CAUSEWAY SCHEME.
Heathcote Council Unable to Help. HAS NOT THE MONEY. If construction of the M'Corjnack’s Bay causeway is proceeded with, little financial help can be expected from the a Heathcote County Council. The F county chairman, Mr H. C. FJavell, explained at the meeting of the coun- Ii cil last evening that while the council j was not opposed to the proposal, the finances of the county made it impossible to help. 1 Mr A. G. Williams, in whose riding the causeway would be, said that at a meeting of ratepayers in his riding, the I< proposal was turned down. It would b a very serious thing for the ridingThey did, however, favour aycauseway on the outside of the tramway- This G road would fit in with the road by the g soapworks, and the road at Redcliffs Mr Flavell said that it would be unwise to put a sprag in the wheels of the scheme, but it should be made clear G that Heathcote could not contribute. s Mr F. W. Freeman said that the county must not take up too parochial an attitude on the question of unemployment. The Metropolitan Technical Committee had almost wilted away. R It had suggested major schemes. In North Canterbury £250.000 to £300.000 w was being spent annually on unemploy- m ed relief, and with nothing to show for it.
