ISLAND TRADE LOST.
Maui Pomare’s Withdrawal from Auckland. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 30. “A published statement from the Dunedin Importers’ and Shippers’ Association on the subject of the Maui Pomare shows that there is some misunderstanding as to the consequences to Auckland’s trade through the withdrawal of this vessel,” stated Mr F. A. Hellaby this morning. “The effect to Auckland,” he added, “is that we have no passenger service to Apia and Samoa. We lose entirely our service to Niue and we lose the shipping facilities to send perishable cargo (butter and meat) into Samoa. Neither mail steamers nor other ships in the island trade provide these services. The loss of this trade is a very serious loss to Auckland.”
