MORE ECONOMIES URGED.

New Premiers Speak at Conference. CANBERRA, June 29. At the resumption of the Premiers' Conference, the Premier of New South Wales, Mr Stevens, yielding to a warning by the Prime Minister, Mr Lyons, that all Governments must be prepared to make drastic cuts in deficits next year, said he hoped to be able progressively to reduce his estimated shortage by £4,000,000 a year. Mr Stevens emphasised that by straining at excessive economy, they might damage the national position. He strongly advocated scientific adjustment of exchange in order to help primary producers. Above all, a constant endeavour must be made to get people back to work. He suggested that the Conference adjourn for a month in order to deal with the problems outlined. The Premiers of other States expressed general support for the Premiers’ Plan. Mr Forgan Smith, Labour Premier of Queensland, intimated that he would do everything in his power towards balancing the Budgets, but he urged a revision of the Premiers’ Plan. He pointed out that despite the Premiers’ Plan, the Budgets were still unbalanced, unemployment ./as on the increase in all States, and the restoration of con- 1 fidence was as far olf as ever.
