Whitefield is said to have been the first to use the expression “ Cleanliness is next to Godliness ” in a sermon “ On Dress,” when he says: “Certainly this is a duty, not a sin. Cleanliness is indeed next to Godliness Bacon, in “ The Advancement of Learning,” wrote: “ For cleanness of body was ever esteemed to proceed from a due reverence to God, to society, and to ourselves.”
