ONLY ONE BUYER.
Vendors of Pige Complain of Position. “ That, owing to the unsatisfactory practice now ruling in the pork and veal sections at the Addington market, and only one buyer operating, investigations be made into marketing methods in other countries with a view to finding some better system whereby farmers may obtain value for their stock.” This remit from the Ellesmere branch was passed at the annual conference of the North Canterbury executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday. Statements were made that, through butchers doing their buying through the one agent, there was practically a monopoly in the buying of pigs and vealers. Neither the Saleyards Company nor the auctioneers, it was said, could remedy the trouble. The subject was referred to the provincial executive for investigation.
