An old saying styles the cuckoo “ The Harbinger of Spring.” The word “ harbinger” means something more than is indicated there. He was the official who went before any important personage on his travels to arrange his harbour or lodging. The King’s harbinger performed such duties during a royal progress; and the office survived, in name, till a century ago.
