Trial for N.Z. Footballs.
Many reasons for supporting local industry were advanced at the meeting of the Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last night. A sample football was submitted by a New Zealand firm. The committee considered that the ball compared favourably with the imported article, and it was decided to give it a fortnight’s trial. « 52 5-2 Water Chute in Weir. A complaint that curved or flatbottomed boats were damaged in being hauled over the rollers of the weir at the lower end of the rowing course was made to the Drainage Board last night by a man whose launch is moored some distance above the weir. He suggested that a water chute should replace the rollers. The engineer (Mr J. Cullens) stated that the launch was large enough to be taken through the water gate instead of over the rollers, but no request had been made for the opening of the gate. The secretary (Mr C. F. Champion) stated that the board had power to fix fees for opening the gate, subject to the approval of the Minister of Marine. The board decided that the engineer should prepare a report on the question of providing a water chute.
