DRAMA AT WOMEN’S CLUE
First Performance of the Year Given. TWO SUCCESSFUL PLAYS. The evenings given by the Drama Circle of the Canterbury Women’s Club have become among the most popular of the social activities of the club. Last evening when the members of the circle made their first appearance for the new year with two small plays—“ Saint Joan” (Bernard Shaw) and “The Grand Cham’s Diamond” (Allan Monkhouse)—the seating accommodation in the reception room was filled to capacity with members of the club and their friends, vvhose enjoyment of the entertainment was evident. Miss Ellen Jones, who has taken over the leadership of the Drama Circle this year, was heartily congratulated by Mrs R. T. Tosswill, who presided, and by many of those present, for her splendid production of the plays. Though handicapped by inadequate staging, difficulty in "irocuring suitable materials for costumes, shortage of time, and the absence of a drop-curtain, the result was outstanding. The members taking part were free from nervousness and their voices carried clearly to the back of the room, while the characters were well sustained throughout. In the interval pianoforte solos were given by Mrs Clifton-Mogg and vocal solos by Miss M. Wraight, The casts in the plays were as follows:—“Saint Joan”: Robert de Baudricourt, Miss E, Blackham; Steward, Mrs Geo. Maginness; Joan D’Arc, Miss E. Jones; Bertrand de Poulengey, Miss A. Freeman. “The Grand Cham’s Diamond”: Mrs Perkins, Miss Gill; Mr Perkins, Mrs H. Wyatt; Polly Perkins, i Miss E. Bachelor; A Man in Black, Miss E. Grand; Albert Watkins, Miss E. Lockwood.
