Barked Like a Dog .

Nature Notes

By James Drummond. F.L.S.. F.Z.S.

MINER, prospecting for gold on Coromandel Peninsula, had his attention drawn to the barking of a dog chained to a kennel and resting on the ground with its head between its paws. “ That’s a funny dog of yours,” he said to the owner, “it can bark without moving.”

He was told that the barking was made by a pet tui kept in a cage.

This tui was not only an expert mimic, but also seemed to be an accomplished ventriloquist. Its barks sometimes sounded as if away in the distance, and sometimes came loudjy direct from the cage. This entertaining and lovable pet lived to the age of twenty years.
