LIFE SAVING.

New Brighton’s Success in Competitions. The Sumner Cup, Ray Blank Cup and Benson Shield competitions were held by the Canterbury Surf and Life Saving Association at New Brighton yesterday.

Although the day was cold, conditions were good for surfing, with a comparatively calm sea and a very slight northerly drift. The competitions were held on a rising tide, and consequently allowances had to be made for each team. Under these conditions the surfing was of a high standard, and the performances were very uniform, making the judging difficult. Results:— Sumner Cup—North Beach 1, New Brighton A 2, Taylor’s Mistake B and Sumner A equal 3, South Brighton 5, New Brighton B and Taylor’s Mistake A equal 6. Sumner B were unable to finish. The winning team was:—North Beach—A. T. Dalton (belt, time lmin Slsec), C. R. Riordan (reel), D. H. Symes (line), A. L. Taylor (patient), V. G. Spiller (instructor). The Benson Shield competition, a seven-man alarm event for boys under seventeen years, resulted as follows: New Brighton A—C. Cliff (support, time 2min 9 l-ssec), R. M’Kenzie (belt, time 2min 47 3-ssec), G. Horwell (line), D. Cocks (reel), J. Stevens (line), E. Ansley (line), S. Besley (patient) and C. W. Smith (instructor), 1; New Brighton B, 2; Sumner, 3. In the Ray Blank Cup, a seven-man alarm event, the teams were placed as follow:—New Brighton A—A. T. Stokes (support, time 2min 42 2-ssec), N. Smith (belt, time 3min 52 3-ssec), W. Herrick (reel), C. Herd (line), H. G. Smith (line), R. Shillito (line). C. AV. Smith (instructor), 1; North Beach, 2; Taylor’s Mistake and Sumner A equal, 3; New Brighton B, 5; Sumner B, 6; South Brighton, 7. The Sumner Cup, Benson Shield and Ray Blank Cup were presented to the winners by the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., late In the afternoon. The athletic events arranged by the New Brighton Club resulted:— Musical Flag Race—X. M’Phail (Sumner) 1. Wheelbarrow . Race—H. J. Allard (Taylor’s Mistake) and H. J. Bailey (Tavlor’s Mistake) 1. 50yds—S. G. Henry (Sumner) 3. D. H. Symes (North Beach) 2, C. H. M Phail (Sumner) 3.
