ROWING EIGHT.

Canterbury Team for Picton Regatta. The Canterbury representative eightoar crew to compete in the New Zealand championship race on Picton Harbour at Easter was chosen after the Christchurch Regatta at Kairakl on Saturday. The selectors were Messrs G. H. Hobbs, H. Ayers and A. T. Evans. The Canterbury has three representatives in the crew, Avon has two, and a ninth man, Union has two, and Akaroa one. The crew will be:— C. A. STILES (Avon). F. H. THOMPSON (Avon). G. EAST (Canterbury). S. W. COX (Canterbury). J. O. M’GIFFEN (Canterbury). D. REID (Akaroa). C. COOPER (Union). G. TONER (Union). J. GILBY (Avon) is ninth man. The crew will probably go into camp at Redcliffs for a week’s training on the Sumner Estuary. The order in which the members of the crew are given above does not necessarily mean that they will fill these respective positions in the boat. It is understood that the stroke seat will be occupied by either Stiles or Reid, the latter being considered an oarsman capable of driving tlie boat along remarkably well. Stiles and Thompson are the pair-oar champions? cf New Zealand. Thompson and Gilby represented New Zealand at the British Empire Games at Hamilton, Canada. Reid, with W. W. Reid, has been a tower of strength to the Akaroa Club for some years. He is still a junior oarsman, as is also M’Giffen. Cox. Cooper and Toner are still rowing in the youths’ class.
